About the Summer School on Investigative Reporting

The Centre for Media Studies at SSE Riga invites you to attend the sixth Summer School on Investigative Reporting. Lectures representing the best of the best.

The keynote speaker - David Kaplan, is a true giant in investigative reporting.

Kaplan has decades of experience as a prize-winning investigative reporter. Today, as the executive director of Global Investigative Journalism Network, he promotes international cooperation and education in times when journalism and journalists are under pressure all over the world.

Besides giving the opening speech he will provide a guided tour through the GIJN Help Desk, a space designed to help investigative journalists around the world.

The Conference will feature in depth seminars with internationally recognized journalists from the USA, Sweden, Bosnia and Herzegovina and provide various networking opportunities. On the final day Re:Baltica will inspire us with the display of best investigative stories from around the Baltic Sea Region.

  • Jennifer LaFleur will show how to analyse data and shape it into a compelling story.
  • Rosemary Armao will talk about how to do “Investigations with limited resources”, as well as help develop skills for interviewing and writing longer stories.
  • Nils Hanson in his seminar “The Ethics of Investigative Journalism” will include aspects from “The end justifies the means” on to how to treat sources, the bad guys and fact checking.
  • Drew Sullivan and Miranda Patrucic from the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) will explain how organized crime and corruption works and how to make a tough story stick.
  • Inga Springe and Sanita Jemberga from Re:Baltica will present the best of journalism from around the Baltic Sea, published after our fifth Summer School in August 2016. International journalists will tell their stories.
